Caring for Oral Hygiene Products

There are a variety of products used for oral hygiene care, including toothbrushes, tongue scrapers, and dental picks. These products are crucial to the cleanliness of your gums and teeth, but it is just as important that the products you use are clean. Bathrooms are filled with bacteria and germs, and if those end up on oral hygiene products you are using it can damage your teeth and gums. There are some simple ways to limit the germs that come into contact with your oral hygiene products.

Storing Your Hygiene Products

Where you store your oral care products matters because of the bacteria common in specific areas of the bathroom. Keeping your toothbrush near the sink or toilet means it is more likely to come in contact with germs. Storing your toothbrush and other oral care products in a cabinet or up on a shelf is a simple step to prevent bathroom germs from getting in your mouth. It is also a good practice to keep the toilet lid closed when flushing because that can spread bacteria throughout the bathroom.

Cross-contamination

If you don’t live alone, you’re probably sharing a bathroom. A toothbrush holder is important in a shared bathroom to keep everyone’s mouth healthy. Get your family in the habit of always storing their brushes upright to dry in a toothbrush holder. This will prevent cross-contamination and keep your toothbrushes clean.

Life Expectancy

When the bristles of a toothbrush are worn out and aged, they no longer clean your teeth and gums effectively. Some brushes have colored bristles that fade to indicate it’s time for a replacement, but it is recommended to use a new toothbrush about every 3 months. If you have just gotten over an illness or infection, it is also a good time to replace your toothbrush to help prevent further infection.

Good oral hygiene starts with the proper care of your toothbrush and other oral care products. Keeping germs and bacteria from contacting them is the first step to getting your teeth and gums their cleanest!
